Modeled after the Chamber of Commerce’s very successful Leadership Allegany! Program, Leadership Allegany! Rising is open to all Allegany County high school students entering their junior year. The program provides positive change by creating a network of future leaders committed to impacting their community.
In a forum of open discussion and interaction, class members participate in five different topic days designed for dialogue and interaction. On Thursday, Feb. 9 the Class of 2023 had the opportunity to visit Frostburg State University and Allegany College of Maryland as part of Higher Education Day, which strives to raise awareness of the higher ed landscape and the opportunities available at these institutions.
Students arrived on the campus of FSU where they were greeted by Dr. Ronald Nowaczyk, FSU President, Dr. Traki Taylor, FSU Provost, and Mr. Robert Fuller, FSU Associate Director of Admissions. Students enjoyed lunch in the Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall, visited with members of the faculty on-hand to represent a variety of departments and then took part in a walking tour of the TV studio, planetarium, and athletic facilities.
“I was grateful to have the opportunity to share what FSU is all about to these talented students,” said President Nowaczyk. “We are always excited to have our local student leaders on campus.”
Prior to their visit to Frostburg, the Leadership Allegany! Rising class stopped at Allegany College of Maryland where they were welcomed by Dr. Cynthia Bambara, ACM President, Dr. Kurt Hoffman, ACM Senior VP of Instructional Affairs, and Mr. David Jones, ACM VP of Advancement and Community Relations/Executive Director of ACM Foundation. While there the students visited the multimedia studio, the MAC lab and had a meet and greet with career and transfer programs.
Leadership Allegany! Rising Higher Education topic day chairs included Dr. Bill Rocks, ACM Dean of Career Education, Dr. Mihaela Wood, ACM Dean of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Sara-Beth Bittinger, FSU Associate VP for External Relations and Fiscal Affairs.
